Finding a good work-life balance

Does your life feel like a juggling act?

  • Do you feel you have two jobs but no life?
  • Do you constantly rush from one chore or responsibility to another?
  • Do you feel you have enough, or even ANY, time for yourself?
  • Do other people’s needs (your partner, children, employer, family) always come first before your own?

If the answer to any of these questions is YES then you could benefit from a work-life management programme.

Finding a better work/home life balance is today’s women’s most pressing concern. A BBC news report has publicised what many women already know : that many of us are stressed out with the constant pressure and demands of trying to “do-it-all.” No wonder rates of anxiety and depression are so high amongst women.

Whilst a challenge to many family men is the denial of any time with their family due to long working/travelling hours, many women struggle with the burden of juggling work and family life.

Whilst many working women also find value, enjoyment, status and even fulfilment in a career, however such statistics also suggest that a poor work-life balance and inadequate support is significantly affecting many women’s health and general well-being.

In spite of the rise of the “new man” concept most women, including working mothers, still shoulder primary responsibility for domestic chores and childcare in spite of their often substantial contribution to the household income. Many women suffering stress or depression quote ‘lack of sleep’ and ‘exhaustion’ as major contributory factors. Guilt is an ongoing problem for many working mothers as they, along with other women, try to live up to a ‘superwoman’ ideal. Many admit to shouting at their children due to stress. One survey of working women found 84% of those surveyed were disillusioned with work and 75% would “quit their job if they could” showing many such women work purely for money and would give up work if finances permitted.

Single women, whilst relieved of the responsibility of child care, often suffer the enormous financial burden of a single income mortgage combined with a lack of the emotional support normally gained from a partner. Studies show the value of a close, emotional confidant in maintaining good emotional and mental health, self-esteem, and avoiding depression or overwhelm. One such study found young women who lacked a close, confiding or intimate relationship showed a high vulnerability to depression when faced with adversity.
